From Mighty Comics Group, 1966:

Created in Pep Comics #1 in 1940, the original Golden Age Comet
fought crime using his flight powers and deadly "dissolvo-vision"
until he was gunned down by gangsters in issue #16 (June 1941).
The Silver Age Comet premiered in The Fly #30 (October, 1964), and
was originally presented as an alien from outer space, wearing one
the most garish costumes ever and sporting an Errol Flynn 'stash.
In a 1966 story the writers retconned this origin into the original
origin, ignoring the character's very permanent death in 1941.
So, apparently, this is the original comet. Maybe.

There are three variant skins, dealing primarily with the lowest
helmet color of the fabulous "rainbow helmet": one has a green band
(this is favored by Ken and the new colorists at Archie); one has a
blue band (Mr Aratak's fave); and one has a strange blue "lip" on
the front of the helm. All three variations are present in the
original Mighty Comics issues. Apparently, the helmet changes
from panel to panel, coruscating with cosmic power. That, or the
colorist and editors just really didn't care. There is ample
evidence of the latter.

This hexxed mesh and skin go out as a loving tribute to the mighty
Copper Age, master skinner of MLJ lore and other mysterymen, who
could never bring himself to skin this incredibly taste-challenged hero.
